Thai-Filipino singer/songwriter Michael Sawatsewi enjoyed solo success in Thailand in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s with his debut Thai-language album “Sawasdee Michael” (A-Town/Music-X/ONPA), overseen by renowned producer Kai Sutee Sangsareechon, a former member of legendary local rock group Grand X and beloved judge on the hit reality-TV competition “Academy Fantasia”. The album was also co-produced by award-winning Italian producer and film score composer Bruno Brugnano.
Despite the Asian financial crisis of the late ‘90s, Michael’s debut album was a bestseller and a multi-nominee at the prestigious Prapikaned Awards on the strength of the singles “Cheb Krao Nee” and “Pood La Sak Kam”. The songs enjoyed resurgence when they were featured in the top-rated Thai dramas “Sairoong” and “Sam Noom Nua Thong”. To this day, the songs enjoy recurrent airplay and have been covered by numerous Thai artists and local live bands.
Time to time, Michael continues to perform live at events that vary from acoustic cover gigs to electronic music showcases to nostalgia concerts. He independently released a new Thai album under the artist name ‘MaGana’, a subtle nod to his Filipino roots. The Thai album, “aka Michael Sawatsewi”, features a remake of “Pood La Sak Kam” and a duet with popular Thai actor/singer Andy Kempimook entitled “Atitahn”. It was released exclusively via iTunes (http://smarturl.it/akaMS) and other digital stores in 2015.
